Love this video. Liked and subscribed and more importantly I’m walking away knowing more than I started with. This opened my eyes to some more automotive history that I can enjoy learning about

When I was 11-12 at school in the late 80's I had a friend whose old man was very wealthy, I went to his house once... well, it was a stately home really - a vast mansion with a mile long driveway, set in landscaped gardens with a boating lake in front of the house... anyway, in the courtyard at the back of the house there were a few tasty cars, but the ones I remember were a Bentley Turbo R and a 6x6 Range Rover like this one... it had a big old TV in the back and like a bar with crystal decanters and cut glassware. I remember my friend and his brother each had a 1/2 or 2/3 size Lamborghini Countach with real scissor doors, petrol engine, leather interior, proper car radio, and they gave no fucks about them! That was a crazy glimpse into a rich man's world but the Range always stuck in my memory, very cool car!

Just found your page after seeing you on VinWikee. John my father was the Porsche/Audi dealer in Macon, GA from 1969-1987, so of course from the age of 6 in 1969 until my late teens I pretty much attended every race at Road Atlanta and Daytona 24hr and Sebring. I was there when Donohue wrecked at Road Atlanta, although Donohue was not terribly hurt there was a track guy that was killed from the debris in that wreck.My dad would not let us sit at the end of the back straight after that or on the dirt spot just after the bridge where many a car would become airborne. I liked Donohue but my guy was Perfect Peter aka Peter Gregg and then dad moved to Nissan, and I became not just a Brumos fan , but Fitzy and Paul Newman fan my dad’s best friend worked for Jim Fitzgerald’s pit crew during those years. Road Atlanta in those days was the Wild West, fans would throw frisbee’s on the track in between races. They had bathtub races, barstool races. It was insane. It’s good to see someone talk about some of the old days of Porsche. Looking forward to watching more of your videos. Thanks for persevering this for the future.

Myself having lived in that race era, and even attending some Can Am races, chances are the series would have withered away due to the McLaren dominance without the arrival of Porsche. Race circuits like Laguna Seca were mostly a parade of exotic race cars.

The shifter moving around was the original langheck/longtail cars from early 1969, drivers reported the entire shift mechanism/box moving around due to chassis flex of the original cars which were a little flimsy. You see them weaving around under braking because the chassis wasn’t up to the level of the brakes. According to Brian Redman you could see the chassis tubes flexing during heavy braking. One of my favorite parts of a historic race weekend is the Cam am cars. McClaren, Shadow. Porche , Chappell. Amazing cars. Big block roar , massive tires. A gear head paradise.

The 120 was one of my fathers favorite cars. R.I.P. Dad.

Wow looks great, I have just bought a 928 recently to turn it into a Safari for a Race in North Africa planned for late 2025. I am looking at option for a Lifting the car, Did you lift the car just with Ali Spacers and Tire Change and what did you achieve in extra Hight? With the 2" spaces did you change any of the Arms ? What size tires did you go with ? 215/80/16 ? Any information would be great. Many thanks

John I love your stories about the old school cars. BUT, You are by far the greatest Bench Racer ever !!!!!! I have bench raced with the likes of A J Foyt Phil Hill , Just to be a name dropper. I have been blessed to be able to have two 12hr at Sebring under my belt, back around those years of the 917. I could almost feel the lope of the cam when you told the story. You are the best bench acer of all time. For those of you that don't know what bench racing is, Welllllll If you have never raced a car or jumped the wall with a fuel can, You may not understand Just sit back and enjoy the show.

Im sure they would be MUCH more expensive now, but even back then, to buy a 917 for a road car had to be outrageously pricey. Good luck finding parts if ANYTHING needs to be replaced. It's still a super awesome purchase, regardless, haha.

I was at Long beach in 1988 for my 1st. Indycar race, I also saw the Trans Am 200 in action, the next year (1989) I went to Del Mar and saw the IMSA GTO 90 quattro!

Hello Ficarra, I don’t know how often you read your comments but I have a few questions and hopefully you can answer. My neighbor has an unrunning 1974 Porsche 914 LE, which from my understanding means Limited Edition, and I’m pretty sure they made only made 1,000. It comes with a unique bumber, rocker panel, and a 2 liter engine instead of the standard 1.8 liter. And really awesome orange wheels. I’m hoping that I can shrewdly negotiate a good deal with them and Purchase the car, but I wanted to know if you had any facts about them or if you even knew about them, thanks

Although the 917/30 was more technologically advanced, I always thought that the 917/10 was a more elegant looking car. That said, my all-time favourite was the 1972 McLaren M20.
